What is a Network
A network is basically a group of entities connected for the benefit of sharing information. So this could be devices or even people.

Computer networks have numerous types and possible the one we all know is the Internet. To understand the Internet you need to have some knowledge of basic networks, so lets put it all together as simply as we can.

A basic computer network is at least two computers connected via cable. To connect more than two (2) you need a second device called a switch or hub. A hub is like a big power board for all the computers to plug into. This type of network is called a LAN (Local Area Network) these networks are created in a local area like a room or the same building.

Ok, now we have a LAN, lets connect our LAN with another LAN in either another building or even another town or state. To do this we need another device called a Router. This device is a little smarter than a switch/hub because it needs to remember addresses etc. Once we have our LAN's connected we now have a WAN (Wide Area Network). These networks cover a wide are such as towns/cities, states even countries.

If we connect all these WAN's and LANs together we get a super network called, you guessed it the Internet. Connecting all these networks together is done via a network of routers that are in most cases controlled via an ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Common Problems
Common Problems - In most homes and offices you have a number of devices that need to communicate. This could be a series of computers and routers or even just one computer and a router. Which ever arrangement you have doesn't matter as the requirements are the same. As mentioned in the previous paragraph all devices need to be talking the same language.

When we say same language they need to be in the same address or street if you like. For example 12 Smith street cant talk directly to 24 Jones street, 192.168.1.1 wont talk to to 10.1.1.50, to add to this confusion we also have a thing called a network mask which looks like 255.255.255.0 this could be likened to say a town like brisbane and each town also have their own mask like Sydney could be 255.0.0.0. So as you can possibly start to understand that a network can sometimes be rather complex.

Whew! After all that the common problems we see are;

1. Devices have different addresses
2. Damaged cables
3. Damaged or failed device
4. Firewall ( Security)
5. Account details incorrect

As you can see there are a number of different problems that can cause network failure.

Before contacting your local repair centre, there are a few things you can check to ensure that they are correct.

1. Ensure that your ISP is operational - this can be achieved by giving them a phone call.
2. Make sure all cables are connected.
3. Check modem for a solid DSL light
4. Access modem and ensure it is connected
5. Connect other computer to modem if possible

If either unsure or steps taken failed we are only a phone call away and can have you on the Net in no time, so give us a call today...
